Functional Capacity Assessments | NDIS FCA Cabramatta and Sydney

At Evolution Health Clinic, we provide Functional Capacity Assessments (FCA) for NDIS participants across Cabramatta and Sydney. Our experienced Occupational Therapists assess how your disability affects your everyday life and provide clear, evidence-based recommendations to help you access the supports you need. Whether you are preparing for a NDIS plan review, requesting a plan reassessment, experiencing a change in circumstances, or seeking funding for supports such as Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), a NDIS FCA can provide important evidence about your functional capacity and support needs.

Our goal is to make the assessment process straightforward, respectful and focused on what matters most to you.

What Is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment is a comprehensive assessment of how you manage everyday activities and how your disability affects your ability to function independently.

A FCA looks beyond a diagnosis. It considers how your condition affects your practical day-to-day life, including your ability to complete tasks, communicate, move around, make decisions, manage your home and participate in the community.

Depending on your circumstances, your assessment may consider:

  • Personal care, including showering, dressing and grooming
  • Domestic tasks such as cooking, cleaning and laundry
  • Mobility, transfers and physical endurance
  • Communication and social interaction
  • Cognitive skills, including memory, attention and decision-making
  • Community access and participation
  • Transport and travel
  • Sensory processing
  • Continence and personal care
  • Safety and risk
  • Capacity to live independently
  • Current supports and support requirements

The assessment is tailored to your individual circumstances rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Why Do I Need a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A NDIS Functional Capacity Assessment can help provide a clearer picture of the practical impact of your disability and the level of support you require.

A FCA report may be useful when you are:

  • Preparing for an NDIS plan review
  • Requesting a plan reassessment
  • Making a change of circumstances request
  • Providing evidence for additional supports
  • Seeking SIL funding recommendations
  • Seeking SDA funding recommendations
  • Reviewing your current level of support
  • Requesting assistive technology or equipment
  • Considering home modifications
  • Transitioning to greater independence
  • Applying for the NDIS and requiring evidence of functional impairment

Your assessment findings can help explain why particular supports may be reasonable and necessary based on your individual functional needs.

NDIS FCA Reports for Plan Reviews and Reassessments

If your circumstances have changed or your current NDIS funding no longer reflects your support needs, an FCA can provide up-to-date information about your functional capacity.

Our reports can document your current abilities, areas of difficulty, existing supports and recommended supports. Where appropriate, we provide detailed clinical reasoning and evidence to support recommendations for your NDIS plan.

This can be particularly helpful when preparing for:

  • NDIS plan reviews
  • Plan reassessments
  • Change of circumstances requests
  • Changes in functional capacity
  • Changes in living arrangements
  • Increased support requirements
  • Requests for additional or alternative supports

We focus on presenting the information clearly so that your functional needs and recommendations are easy to understand.

Can a Functional Capacity Assessment Be Done Online?

Yes – we offer flexible options! A Functional Capacity Assessment can be done in person or via telehealth, depending on what works best for you. Many parts of the assessment, including interviews and some functional tasks, can be completed remotely.

Online assessments help avoid delays and can be just as effective when in-person visits aren’t possible. We’ll advise whether an online or hybrid model is appropriate based on your needs.

What Happens During a Functional Capacity Assessment?

Your FCA will involve a mix of interviews, observations, and standardised testing. Although no two assessments are exactly the same, here’s what to expect:

  1. Initial Consultation – We’ll discuss your background, medical history, and goals.

  2. Daily Living Skills Assessment – You'll be asked about or observed performing activities like cooking, cleaning, personal care, and using transport.

  3. Cognitive and Mobility Evaluation – We assess things like memory, attention, balance, mobility aids, and physical endurance.

  4. Environmental Assessment – If needed, we’ll assess your home setup to identify any safety or accessibility issues.

  5. Input from Carers or Family – With your permission, we may speak to your support network to get a fuller picture.

  6. Recommendations and Reporting – You’ll receive a detailed written report, which you can use for NDIS planning or review.

What Does the NDIS FCA Report Include?

The report from your NDIS FCA provides a clear summary of your abilities, needs, and the supports recommended. It typically includes:

  • Your background and diagnosis

  • Assessment findings

  • Analysis of your functional strengths and limitations

  • Identified support needs

  • Personal goals and aspirations

  • Recommended therapies, assistive technology, or home modifications

  • Evidence-based justification for requested NDIS funding

  • Implementation strategies

Our reports are designed to meet NDIS requirements and support both new applications and plan reviews.

How Long Does a Functional Capacity Assessment Take?

A typical Functional Capacity Assessment can take from 1-3 hours. The report writing can take an additional 5–10+ hours, depending on the complexity of your situation and the level of detail required.

We will provide a full quote and time estimate before starting.

Does My Therapist Need to Be the Same Person Who Provides Therapy?

Not necessarily. While it can be beneficial for the same therapist to continue with therapy after completing the NDIS FCA, it’s not a requirement. At Evolution Health Clinic, we’ll work with you to ensure the right therapist is matched to your ongoing therapy needs.

Do I Need a Functional Capacity Assessment to Apply for the NDIS?

While a FCA is not mandatory when applying for the NDIS, it can significantly strengthen your case. A Functional Capacity Assessment provides formal evidence of reduced functional capacity, which is a key eligibility criterion for NDIS access.

If you're already in the scheme, it helps guide your therapy funding and ensures supports are aligned with your goals.
